Governance Leadership

Edu-Gov provides a discreet, Professional Chairing Service in the following settings:

  • Chairing Local Academy Governance for a short, fixed, agreed-upon period to lead, develop, and build effective local governance in Academies, where appropriate and in the trust's best interests; challenging, supporting, and delivering stakeholder engagement during your school improvement journey.

  • Chairing Interim Executive Boards (IEBs) of maintained schools, providing leadership, interim expertise, and high-quality governance to support future improvement and promote high standards of educational achievement before leading recruitment and the transition into a traditional governing board.

  • Chairing panels and Disciplinary Committees, including Independent Review Panels (IRPs), Governor Exclusion Panels, Complaints, and Disciplinary appeals.

If you require an experienced independent governor and chair to lead panels, committees and hearings, Edu-Gov can provide professional, skilled and impartial leadership delivered with sensitivity and discretion. If you are transitioning from an interim executive board, a school improvement advisory group, or a transition management board. Edu-Gov can quickly and effectively lead and build a sustainable new local governing body from the inside, from creating new boards or committees to nurturing and finessing your existing governing body.

I recently set up and Chaired a brand new local governing body of an Academy on a journey towards improvement to replace the previous school improvement advisory board.

I recruited a full complement of governors, facilitating them into link roles and helping nurture their relationships with the school and setting the structure and culture for LGB meetings - mentoring and supporting each volunteer in their role.

Four months after the first full LGB meeting, I led the LGB through an Ofsted inspection from which local governance was described as “effective” and “strong” and leadership awarded “Good”. Every member of the LGB took time off work and turned out in person to meet the lead inspector.

Three months later, the Academy transitioned to a new permanent chair (who I’d recruited and encouraged to be initially vice-chair), and I stepped down.

The process took nine months, from having zero local governors to a fully functioning and effective LGB with a new Chair.
